BSides Columbus' Response to COVID-19

First of all, we would like to start out by saying thank you to the Central Ohio and greater Midwest information security communities for your support of BSides Columbus. We’ve reached near venue capacity leading up to this year’s event, and we couldn’t have been more excited about that. With that being said, The BSides Columbus Board of Advisors has closely watched and monitored the COVID-19 outbreak, and over this past week alone, the situation has only grown worse in the State of Ohio.

After much consideration, The BSides Columbus Board has unanimously voted to postpone BSides Columbus to August 19th- 21st, 2020. The safety and health of conference attendees is our top priority, and the last thing we would want to do is put community members at risk to this virus. We are going to get through this thing together, and we promise that August’s conference will be held up to the same standard as past BSides Columbus events.

What does this mean for me?

If you’ve already purchased a ticket for BSides Columbus, that ticket is still valid for August’s conference. Same thing goes for BSides Columbus training classes, if you’ve purchased separate tickets for training, those tickets will still be honored by the trainers. If you know for a fact that you’ll be unable to attend the future conference date, a full refund will be given to you, no questions asked. We are currently in the process of coordinating a refund policy with the different training courses as well. More details will be released on the training class refund policy soon.

How can I protect myself against COVID-19?

The most common ways one can prevent getting COVID-19 is by doing the following:

  • Wash your hands often

  • Avoid close contact with others

  • Cover coughs and sneezes

  • Stay home if you’re sick

  • Disinfect surfaces

  • Wear a facemask ONLY if you are already sick

Refer to more details about protecting yourself from COVID-19 here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/prevention.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fabout%2Fprevention-treatment.html

What do I do in the meantime until August?

With most individuals working from home at the moment, now might be the best time to begin looking into different online courses to better yourself. Go get that CISSP certification if you’re feeling up to it!

There are also other great conferences going down that will be happening at a later date before our conference:

Central Ohio Infosec Summit (05/21/2020 – 05/22/2020)

BSides Cleveland (06/20/2020)

BSides Pittsburgh (06/26/2020)

Thank you again for respecting our decision to postpone BSides Columbus until we’re able to provide a safe environment for everyone to have a great conference experience. All further questions or concerns can be directed to bsidescmh@gmail.com We can’t wait to see you in August!

Best Regards,

The BSides Columbus Board of Advisors
